Journalism

Shared Ground

Over the course of a semester, I spent hours researching, interviewing, and exploring Western North Carolina, one year after Hurricane Helene. In this process, we prioritized authentic connection over parachute journalism.

Eventually, I met Josh Kelly. He took me mushroom hunting, at a place he’d gone for 24 years but hadn’t returned since the hurricane. As we spent more time together, I witnessed Josh’s deep connection to family, the land, and his community.

For the first time since Hurricane Helene tore through Western North Carolina, a conservationist returns to the beloved oak tree he once discovered with his father, and reflects on the pace of change.

The 9th Street Journal

Pioneered video work for an official publication in Durham, The 9th Street Journal.
